  • I have just seen why drinking ten shots on an empty stomach is a bad idea. I'm glad it wasn't my mistake. If you are having a drinking contest with russians, and they stop, don't think you have won until you have held them down for four hours at least. My game plan is and has been to drink apple juice. It's going great so far, though i wish more people would adopt my approach. Drinking in moderation is fine. Drinking to show off your ego will end badly!

  • I'm off to Russia for two weeks with MGS. I'm staying in St. Petersburg with a russian family and should be speaking russian. I'm "apprehensive" and I hope it all comes back to me as i haven't really spoken it since my GCSE, about 18 months ago. I return to the UK on something like the 16th of July. Dosvedanya Angliya (transliterated Russian: "Goodbye England").

  • Wow! What a disappointment! Glossop Sailing Club will not be taking part in the famous Southport Sailing Club, Junior 12 Hour Race. It seems that the powers at be, at glossop sailing club, do not wish the team of young people i organised, to race in this fantastic challenge! Unsuprisingly, I am somewhat unhappy with this decision and am currently considering all possible options. i will be posting further details in due course. This has really thrown me.

  • Councillor Ivan Bell has been found guilty of being disrespectful AND to have bullied the council press officer, as laid laid out in the code of conduct as defined by high peak borough council's constitution. Councillor Bell still denies the charge of bullying on the grounds that wilst he accepts his actions could be perceived as disrespectful, he considers that his actions are not consistent with those of a bully...

  • Some people on the bus were having a heated debate today. Are pubs characterised by the existance of a pool table? This is a good point. Most pubs in glossop I can think of, either have a pool table OR are more restaurants or bars etc. than pubs. Anyone disagree?

  • So i have lost the election do chairperson of manchester free software eight votes to one. Personally i find it a little discouraging that only 9 people voted but oh well. I wish simon the best of luck over the next six months and look forward to standing against him at the next election.

  • The manchester free software meeting on tuesday was quite interesting. John Leach from brightbox hosting gave two very interesting presentations. One on the web comic called "everyone loves eric raymond" and one on brightbox. John has a slightly different philosophy to me but he seems to have a genuine appreciation of what free software have allowed him to do. Namely, brightbox and ELER. John also mentioned every bit of non free software he uses.

  • Heh. On the first of may, richard stallman, will be speaking at manchester university. There is no cost to attend, and i will certainly be going along. rms will be talking about, free software and ethics in today's world. As president of the free software foundation and initiator of the gnu project, he is certainly qualified to talk on there issues. More info at manchester.fsuk.org

  • According to tom, from #manlug currybeers and manchester free software group. I suppose geekup as well. Congratulations to him for pointing out my deliberate spelling mistake in the post where i said blogging via sms with predictive texting made me spell better! This mistake was deliberate and tom has now been given a (virtual) sat on the back!

  • It's friday. Again.this weekend i have several things planned out.I have a committee meeting, for my sailing club (www.gdsc.org). After that i think we are going for a curry at the bulls head in old glossop (Www.bulls-head.co.uk). On saturday i am going bowling them on to the cinema with a load of friends from my sailing club. I want to see "son of rambow" but others want to see "21". On sunday its likely that i'll be racing up at GSC. It should be fun.

  • As you know i tend to blog via sms for conveniance, this is quite an interesting because i use predictive texting (T9) on my aged 3310. This helps keep my spelling good. I even find the 480 character limit useful. I have a tendency, as pwaring has said, to make the same point four times in an email. Text messages help me keep stuff concise! The more observant of you will notice a few slight changes since you last visited... Feedback is always welcome.

  • Today i am going to a geekup manchester gathering. (www.geekup.org). While i have been part of the manchester techie community for a while, i have avoided geekup in general due to the perception that all it's regulars use Microsoft Windows Vista or Mac OS X. After visiting BSD usergroup and spending time on the geekup mailing list, i have decided to go along, not to advocate OS X, but express views and ideas which are not otherwise represented.I will see.
